Differences in Oral Health between Women and Men

Differences in Oral Health between Women and MenThe differences in oral health between women and men play a significant role in our day-to-day oral hygiene routines. While there are many obvious differences between men and women, you may not think that oral health would be included. You may even think that the differences are not that big or noticeable between the two sexes. Anatomically, the mouth may be the same on both men and women as far as teeth, gum, jaw and tongue go. However, there are various differences with oral health among men and women that you may be shocked to discover!

Myth and Fact about Mouth Structure

There is no anatomical difference between the structure of a man and woman’s mouth. Both have teeth, jaws, gums, and a tongue as mentioned above. Both have baby teeth which fall out and make way for adult teeth. In addition, both are susceptible to periodontal disease and oral cancer.

The difference begins with what occurs in the rest of the body. For example, women experience more hormonal changes that can affect their body than men do. These changes can have a negative effect on the health of a woman’s teeth if they do not properly care for them at home and schedule routine cleanings with their cosmetic dentist.

Pregnancy and Gingivitis

One major difference with men and women and dental care occurs during pregnancy. During pregnancy, between 60 and 75 percent of women experience gingivitis which can lead to serious issues. If this is not properly taken care of, it can lead to a plethora of problems such as gum disease and even TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). Poor oral hygiene in pregnant women can even result in an increase of risk factors associated with their unborn child. It is very important for women to pay close attention to their oral health routine and call our dentist with any signs of gums that are bleeding or sore.

Men and Risk Factors

While women have an increased risk of problems during pregnancy, men have their own risk factors that they should be aware of. For example, men are at a higher risk for the following:

  • Oral cancer
  • Throat cancer
  • Oral HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)
  • Sleep apnea

We offer screenings to help detect the presence of oral cancer and can help you stay on top of your oral care.

Women are Proactive with Dental Care Unlike Men

Fort Lauderdale Celebrity DentistA study that was recently conducted showed that a woman is almost twice as likely to have visited their cosmetic dentist in the last year as a man has. Women also have a better attitude towards the need and importance for dental care. This generally means that a woman is more likely to be committed to a great daily oral hygiene routine. Men generally only visit their dentist for urgent issues such as pain. Single men are less likely to visit their dental office than a married man is. This is typically because their wives make their appointments for them. This occurs when they make appointments for themselves and the kids, they schedule one for the husband as well. Dentist appointments are not usually a top priority for a man but they should be!

Bad Breath Occurs for Different Reasons in Men and Women

Bad breath can be an indicator of poor dental hygiene but it can also mean that you are suffering from an underlying medical issue. Studies show that on average, more men than women smoke. Smoking can affect the freshness of breath and the health of their teeth and gums.  Men are also more likely to be on medications for blood pressure problems and heart problems.

On the other hand, women are more likely to get gum disease which can be a huge risk factor for bad breath (halitosis).

However, you may be suffering from bad breath because of-

  • Sinus infection
  • Eating pugent foods
  • Tonsil stones

These reasons can affect your breath regardless of your sex.
